Gregory Zobel
Hi, my name is Gregory Zobel. Please contact me through gmail; gz7comp at gmail dot com. I really, really dislike the phone. IMing via Skype or Gmail is possible, as is messaging through Facebook, but I truly prefer email.
I find it difficult to write about my teaching because I spent the last year as a student, and I did no teaching. I've not fully assimilated the experience yet, so I don't know how or who I will be as a teacher next time I step into a classroom. It appears that I will probably not be teaching this coming year either. Given this pause, my teaching identity is in flux. I'm not trying to be evasive, it's just that I really do not know what or how I will teach. What I can say is that I am interested in applying usability principles and practices in designing classroom materials, in designing more effective descriptions of expected deliverables, and in learning how my colleagues are designing classroom research.
I applied to RWP for a couple basic reasons: first, to participate in a professional community and to share value with that community; second, to learn about ongoing local classroom research--research undertaken and designed by active faculty and educators and not just professional researchers. That was an ugly sentence. Also, Tracy's been encouraging me to sign up for a while, and I finally am able to do so.
Most of my tech interests revolve around PDFs, EndNote, and open source variations on tools for information & documentation management. I love PDFs, and I attempt to do all of my academic writing/work with electronic documents--and preferably on my netbook. It's an Asus Eee, and it's the best piece of tech I have ever bought.
I'll skip the bio-prompts and throw down some stuff:
I've been with my partner for 17 years. We were married in August 2008.
We have two males budgies, Harold and Junior.
I am embroiled in internet marketing, and I study the work of Frank Kern, Eben Pagan, and Jeff Walker.
I want to live on Malta.
I am very interested in working in academia and in industry.
I just finished coursework in my doctoral program in technical communication and rhetoric at Texas Tech.
I just returned from Lubbock, Texas, where Buddy Holly grew up. Actually, I lived three blocks from his elementary school.
While in Lubbock, I virtually lived at J&B Coffee.
I, too, like combat sports. I've enjoyed Serkan Yilmaz for a while, and I prefer K-1 to UFC. However, UFC has the best spectacle I've seen.
And, I have a tendency to talk. A lot. But I'm working on that.

As you likely know from past meetings at HSU, Greg, I'm a talker too. I'm always trying to keep my mouth shut in order to hear the great things others have to say. Maybe we should develop a secret hand signal to warn each other when we're blabbing on too much.
Eddie and I have been together for 17 years as well. We've also spent time apart lately, so I imagine that it must be nice to be back in the area with your sweetheart after being away for some time.
I am looking forward to meeting you in person. I am taking the Advanced Technology Institute this year and hope to know more about what you already know!
And I really want to know your favorite bit of profanity. . . .
Welcome home, sir. And I suspect you'll find that the RWP ISI makes a perfect bridge--an ideal home--for the mergings of your student and teacher selves.
Those are some incredible kicks! Especially the one where they just touch gloves and then the guy on the left turns around and does a spin kick that takes the guy out-- what was that, a one second fight??! WOW! Is K1 all tae kwan do (sp?) or is it MMA too? Good to see you again Greg. Welcome home.
