Computer Back-up & Synchronization
Yesterday during peer response groups, the topic of losing/lost data came up with Julie and Kelly. I offered to post links to a couple different web-based data back up services. Some of these offer free back up for up to 2 gig--perfect for gradebooks, etc.
Carbonite is what a lot of my TTU colleagues use.
SugarSynch is supposed to be sweet & easy to use.
ChubbyBrain reviews/compares Carbonite & SugarSynch here.
iDrive is another option.
Sue uses MobileMe, I believe, and it backs up and synchronizes multiple devices.
I cannot to speak to possible educator discounts.
An important consideration:
Some services are just online-back up--a web/cloud based hard drive in case your house or the school burns down level of crisis. Other services are back up AND they synchronize some or all of your devices. Some will do laptops, phones, and external drives while others will only work on specific platforms.
My simple solution:
I signed up for SugarSynch, and uploaded my most critical files. Until I know what I'm doing, I don't want to spend money for programs that confuse me.
Hopefully other folks have experience with these or related services & can share them with us.
Caveat
In the recent past, I had three or four of these set up, and many were trying to run simultaneously on my system. It slowed things WAY down. Having one system should be fine, but I wouldn't try four of them.
