Gina Campbell

Hello, I am Gina Faith Campbell; born in Hoopa, CA on September 12, 1961. I attended Humboldt State College Summer School in the late 1960's. My sister, Rebecca, and I both journeyed over the mountain every morning into the fog to summer school . We were with mom who was taking a teacher aide training at the college. The ITEPP program was in its infancy and its first, or nearly first, class of students were doing fieldwork in the summer school and we were the sample group. I remember going two summers in a row. The first summer was heck of fun, because the school, Gist Hall, was set up according to some new "educational philosophy" where the students had the choice of where and when to go to class. I loved it, even though I was pretty young. I managed to experience a lot for a little "Indian girl from the rez". I remember choosing pottery class for a few minutes, then I got into a cooking class. We were making tarts! Something I had no word for at the time. I knew it looked like a little pie and I was so proud of that little tart. It was chocolate and simply gorgeous when it was done. I carried it carefully at the end of class to the little water fountain with all the tiles. Somehow I ended up knocking it over into that sink ruining my highlight of the day. The other class I remember was music. I had a little accordian and the teacher's name was Sue. I still have that accordian and I still can't play it. I remember going to music class once or twice. I can barely remember anything about a math class. I think I may have looked into the door of that class and carried on down the hall to someplace more interesting. There must have been a Library, but I don'
t have a vivid memory of it.

Twenty some years later, I went to HSU graduating and receiving a Multiple Subjects Credential. Then, I went to San Jose State University to get a Library Teaching Credential and a Masters in Library Science. I worked for 5 years in Child Development programs. I've been teaching for 13 years in the K-T District throughout all levels.

I have one daughter, Lacheth, who is 26. I have a grandson, Keh-niwh age 1.11. I am quardian of my neices children, Dawn and Whi-kil, ages 5 and 2.7.

Favorite show, or at least most anticipated, True Blood. Music on my Ipod: if I had my own, Mary J. Blige, Some nice D.J. Mixers, a couple songs by Jesus Lizard and the Aphgan Whigs, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond and jazz artists.

Well Gina I am feeling my age too, but I don't mind. There are a lot of good things about growing older. There is a new book out about how the middle aged brain is at it's peak because experience creates lots of new brain cells. Memory slows down, but the rest of the brain in super sized. I am going to buy it for sure. And just so you know, I was born in 1958!

I am right in there with you gals! And have found shaking it up and restarting roles, careers, etc... keeps the brain cells flowing but with better guidance than when I was 20, 30, 40...

Gina..I love the way you write. It is so fun getting a peek at how your HSU experiences began. Darn that tart!!!

As far as the accordian goes...maybe it will find you again!

I'm still waiting for my brain to supersize. Mostly, it seems to be emptying.

I would have bypassed math for--well, for just about anything else. Hey, there's math in cooking, yes? Perhaps I should have taken a cooking-math class as my first kitchen project involved a half-batch of chocolate-chip cookies (money was too tight for a whole batch). Unfortunately, I managed to include the whole measure of baking soda. Yuck! To this day, I add less soda than called for in any recipe.
